Out of the Pool and Back to School Lock In

Walltown Park Recreation Center and DPR-Athletics’ staff collaborated for an end of the summer celebratory Lock In at Walltown Park Recreation Center on Friday, August 14. 30 local teenagers attended the first time event and enjoyed a night of swimming, dancing, basketball, movies, and special guests.

The night started with a pool party at the Edison Johnson Aquatic Center. DJ Femi kept the party going by playing some of today’s most popular music.
But two hours in the pool wasn’t nearly enough to slow this group down…but we did build an appetite. Have you ever witnessed what 30 teenagers can do to 10 large pizzas? If you haven’t then I encourage you to watch shark week.

So after we stuffed ourselves it was bed time right? Not even close! Next up were our special guests from the Durham County Sherriff’s Office who showed off their swat team van and K-9 unit. These working pups were also very friendly!

After our guests left (approximately midnight) our teens proceeded to take over Walltown. The night consisted of basketball games, computer time, xbox one tournaments, more food and snacks, and movies. The building finally got (somewhat) quite around 5am. At 6am we enjoyed bacon and pancakes before our groggy group walked into the daylight to ride home with parents. It was a fun filled (and exhausting) evening for all of our participants and staff. Can’t wait until the next one!

Camping for the First Time!

We had the opportunity this past Wednesday to take a group of 14 Walltown Summer Campers out to West Point on the Eno to camp! This was many of our campers first time staying overnight in the outdoors, which made it a very special experience. Check out a few of these pictures commemorating our time!

Trail or Park Tuesday

Check out today's park, West Point on the Eno! Combining natural beauty and history, West Point on the Eno is free park along the Eno River spanning 404 acres with three historic buildings. A rebuilt grist mill on the site of what was once the largest mill on the river operates once again after the original closed in 1942, and its products are sold on site. The restored house of the one-time mill owners is also available to tour, and the old tobacco packhouse is now home to the Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography.

There are also five miles of scenic trails along the river and the surrounding bluffs for hiking and fishing, picnic facilities available for rent, an amphitheater used for festivals and concerts, and the river itself, with a natural play space and rapids that can be explored on a paddling trip.
