Should Gambling and Sports Mix?

There's been a lot of chatter around the sports world lately regarding the legalization of sports betting. Of course, this activity is legal in Las Vegas, and from the sound of it, soon to be in New Jersey. This debate is an interesting one, and it's implications are far reaching.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has brought to light recently the need to revisit his organization's previously strong stance against sports betting. This has caused other major sports commissioners to respond with their opinions, ranging from the NFL's Rodger Goodell saying that his league wanted nothing to do with the idea of gambling, to the NHL's Gary Bettman and MLB's Rob Manfried saying that they were intrigued by the idea.

Which direction do you believe they should go in? Does sports betting need to be legalized? Or should the discussion not even take place?

Place your opinions in the comments below, we'd love to hear them!

Four Questions with our Staff

Josh Powell - Recreation Assistant Supervisor - Walltown Park Recreation Center

Q. How long have you been with DPR?

A. I've been with DPR since May of this year. I came here from my hometown department in Jacksonville, NC where I ran a small community center for almost two years.

Q.  What made you want to get into your field?
A.  I've always had a passion for helping others, and this profession lets me do that in an extremely fun and creative environment!

Q.  What's your favorite part about Durham?
A.  I love that there's always something to do! From Durham Bulls games to seeing shows at DPAC to eating at the greatest "hole in the wall" type restaurants, Durham definitely has something for everyone!

Q. Duke or Carolina?
A.  Gonna have to go with the folks from Chapel Hill here... I grew up a Tarheel fan, but my allegiances shifted to the Indiana Hoosiers when I lived there for a short time. Regardless, I have no love for those folks that wear the ugly shade of blue inside of Cameron Indoor.
